Are you an aspiring journalist looking to gain hands-on experience and build your portfolio? Student Living SA is inviting you to apply for an exciting field training opportunity that will allow you to work alongside industry professionals, improve your reporting and writing skills, and even get published!

For over four years, Student Living SA has been running a successful program that has helped numerous students from Tshwane University of Technology gain valuable experience in the world of journalism. With each year, we’ve witnessed a shift in how journalism is practiced, and the students we’ve mentored have demonstrated fresh, innovative approaches to reporting. According to Christopher Mcinga, Publisher of Student Living, “We as a publication have learned how journalism is shifting with the readers, as the students have represented different approaches to reporting. Notable progression includes using social media in their reporting and a writing style that has evolved from the traditional methods many of us are used to.”

At Student Living, we believe that real-world experience is the best way to prepare for a career in journalism. This program offers you the chance to work remotely, utilizing digital communication tools like Zoom, WhatsApp calls and groups, and occasional workshops at our offices. You’ll be working on projects that mirror the fast-paced and dynamic nature of a real newsroom, allowing you to experience the challenges and rewards of the job.

Each year, we approve a select number of students to participate in this program. This approach ensures that we can give each student the attention and mentorship they need to thrive in their field. Our goal is to ensure that you receive the best possible guidance and support throughout your journey.

The key to success in this program is being self-motivated and dedicated to your craft. Although you won’t be working in a traditional office setting, you will be closely coordinated and supported throughout your journey. Our commitment is to ensure that your evaluation forms and appraisal letters are submitted to your institution on time. Your commitment, on the other hand, is to improve your reporting and writing skills through hard work and consistent effort.

Keep in mind that this program will require flexibility. You may find yourself working late nights, weekends, and on days that you might not be used to. However, this hands-on experience will give you a deeper understanding of the field and help you develop a professional attitude towards deadlines and work-life balance.

At the end of the program, you’ll receive an exit letter and have access to mentors who can provide you with recommendation letters for future job applications. This opportunity also allows you to build a journalism portfolio that can be shared with potential employers, showcasing your work and proving your ability to handle real-world assignments.

We’re excited to offer this opportunity to new students who are eager to grow in their journalism career. If you’re ready to take the next step and build your experience in a real-world newsroom setting, apply now and start your journey with Student Living SA!
