Brief for Publishers – 3 May 2024 – World Press Freedom Day

Attention all AIP publishers. We are going to be launching our “Local Media Emergency” Campaign on Friday 3 May – World Press Freedom Day. AIP has created a small team of people working on the campaign.

We need to roll up our sleeves and get ready for the launch! Here are some things we need you to do:

1. Please endorse our campaign by signing the petition on the campaign page of the AIP’s website. Please find the link here: https://aip.org.za/ourvoiceyourpower/

2. Please write an editorial, article or articles for your publication focusing on the media emergency.

Please send to support@aip.org.za WARMEST THANKS IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR SUPPORT Background to World Press Freedom Day – The United Nations General Assembly declared 3 May to be World Press Freedom Day to raise awareness about importance of freedom of the press, to remind governments of their duty to respect and uphold the right to freedom of expression enshrined under Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The day also marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration – a statement of free press principles put together by African journalists in Windhoek in 1991.
