After nearly a month of uncertainty, DNA testing has confirmed that the human remains discovered in Rust de Winter, Gauteng, are those of missing community radio journalist Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli.
The couple mysteriously disappeared in February, prompting a widespread investigation.
On Wednesday, National Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe announced that forensic experts had successfully matched the remains to reference DNA samples provided by the victims’ biological relatives.
“A positive DNA match thus confirms that the discovered remains are that of the missing couple. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has already notified both families and is pleased to have assisted in providing closure,” said Mathe.
Meanwhile, seven suspects arrested in connection with the case are currently appearing before the KwaMhlanga Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga. They face multiple charges, including kidnapping, house robbery, and possession of stolen property.
During the investigation, police recovered two VW Citi Golfs reportedly modified with parts from Ndlovu’s car, along with several household items believed to have been stolen from the couple’s residence.
Ndlovu and Mdhluli were last seen on 18 February 2025, driving away from their home in a white Volkswagen Citi Golf. Their disappearance and the tragic outcome have sent shockwaves through the local community, where Ndlovu was well-known for his work in grassroots journalism.
