A violent windstorm ripped through Pienaar, Mpumalanga, on the evening of Monday, June 9, leaving devastation in its wake. At least 15 households have been left damaged, and two schools—Sicelosetfu Secondary School and Mbongeni Primary School—sustained significant roof damage.
The storm struck at a particularly vulnerable time, as learners are currently sitting for their mid-year examinations. The damage to infrastructure at both schools has raised concerns about the continuity of exams and the safety of students and staff.
City of Mbombela Executive Mayor, Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, visited the affected area on Tuesday and assured residents that the municipality would provide urgent relief. “We will be distributing essentials such as gas stoves and foam mattresses to the affected families,” she said.
While the municipality does not have the capacity to rebuild homes, Mayor Makushe-Mazibuko said her office is working closely with the Department of Co-Operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, as well as the Ehlanzeni District Municipality, to coordinate further support.
Officials are still assessing the full extent of the damage.
Meanwhile, the Mpumalanga Department of Education has yet to issue a statement on the situation or indicate what measures will be taken to assist the schools and ensure learners are able to write their exams in a safe environment.
