The Northern Cape Police in Kimberley, Kuruman and Prieska enforced efforts to eradicate the sale and trafficking of counterfeit goods with the focus on illicit cigarettes and tobacco products.
The Police seized illicit cigarettes and wooka tobacco worth approximately R7.8 million and a fine of R1,500.00 was issued for dealing with illicit medicine.
The police served the shop owners with compliance notice requesting them to provide to the authorities with the required documentation permitting them to possess such consignments.
One Bangladeshi national suspect aged 33 was arrested and will soon appear in the Kimberley magistrate’s court.
The Northern Cape Provincial commissioner Lieutenant General, Koliswa Otola applauded to the collective efforts of the law enforcement agencies, citing that the current level of illicit trade needs to be addressed urgently and the police will strengthen compliance control measures.
