One of the largest global tourism trade shows, Africa’s Travel Indaba, is set to take place from 13-16 May at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) in Durban. This prestigious event will bring together exhibitors from across Africa and buyers from around the world, fostering business transactions, knowledge sharing, and capacity building, particularly for smaller and emerging businesses in the tourism sector.

With floor space already sold out, this year’s Indaba will welcome exhibitors from 26 African countries, reinforcing its status as a Pan-African trade show. Additionally, 120 SMMEs will be featured in the Hidden Gems zone, a collaboration with the Department of Tourism to support emerging businesses.
BONDay: A Prelude to Indaba
The event kicks off with the Business Opportunities Networking Day (BONDay) on 13 May. This segment provides invaluable networking opportunities, thought leadership sessions, and insights into global travel trends.

KwaZulu-Natal Tourism, the provincial hosts, have curated pre- and post-event tours for selected delegates, including media and buyers, to highlight the region’s unique tourism products and experiences.
MEC for Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs, Mr. Siboniso Duma, expresses enthusiasm for hosting the event: “Africa’s Travel Indaba plays a crucial role in driving our province’s tourism growth and economic impact. This year, we are excited to once again feature emerging tourism entrepreneurs through the Tourism Enterprise Development Programme, helping them secure business deals and expand their operations.”
He also reassures attendees of the province’s readiness, stating, “KwaZulu-Natal offers ample accommodation within a reasonable distance of the Inkosi Albert Luthuli ICC, ensuring a seamless experience for visitors.”
Economic Boost for Durban
The event is set to deliver a significant economic uplift for Durban. Councillor Thembo Ntuli, Chairperson of the Economic Development and Planning Committee in eThekwini Municipality, underscores the event’s importance: “Africa’s Travel Indaba is a crucial platform for the tourism industry’s recovery. Durban has hosted this flagship event for years, and it continues to drive economic benefits. We anticipate hotel occupancy rates of 85-95%, and our local tourism operators are eager to showcase their offerings to global buyers and travel agencies.”
The 2023 edition saw a 62% increase in attendance, attracting 8,688 delegates from 22 countries, with over 1,033 exhibiting companies. It contributed R451.5 million to eThekwini’s GDP and R597 million to KwaZulu-Natal’s economy, underscoring its significance as a premier tourism showcase.
