South African entertainment legend Soli Philander has died at the age of 65. The acclaimed actor, presenter, director and comedian’s cause of death has not yet been made public.
Philander became a household name through his work on television, most notably as the host of the Afrikaans music quiz show Liriekeraai. He also fronted the popular game show Vat ’n Kans, where his warmth, humour and natural charisma endeared him to audiences across the country.
Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie extended his condolences to Philander’s family and friends, highlighting the important role the comedian played in South Africa’s cultural and democratic landscape.
McKenzie said Philander spent decades bringing laughter, insight and warmth to audiences nationwide. He noted that the comedian’s storytelling often drew from the lived experiences of communities on the Cape Flats, capturing everyday life with wit, honesty and compassion.
“Artists like Soli play an essential role in our democracy. They help us reflect on our society, find common ground and remind us of our shared humanity,” McKenzie said.
He added that Philander’s charm and storytelling left a lasting impact on the country’s entertainment industry and the many people who followed his work.
“May his loved ones find comfort in knowing that his voice, his jokes and his stories will live on in the hearts of the many he entertained and inspired.”
