The Gauteng Provincial Government has increased its 2025/2026 budget by R886.6 million, re-tabling the total to R172.3 billion following adjustments prompted by changes at the national level.
Finance MEC Lebogang Maile presented the revised budget after the national budget, initially delayed twice due to disagreements over revenue mechanisms, was finally tabled by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana on 21 May 2025.
The budget boost comes from unspent funds and revenue overcollection from the previous financial year, contradicting earlier media reports that R1.8 billion would be lost to National Treasury. “These funds were never lost. They have now been re-injected into the provincial fiscus,” Maile explained.
Key allocations in the adjusted budget include:
- R332 million to Human Settlements,
- R314.9 million to Roads and Transport,
- R100 million to Economic Development,
- R50 million each to the Office of the Premier and the Department of Environment,
- R23.8 million to Agriculture and Rural Development, and
- R18 million to the newly formed Department of Environment.
Despite fiscal pressures, the province affirmed its commitment to funding priorities outlined in the State of the Province Address, including infrastructure development, economic stimulation, and social services.
In April, the Gauteng Investment Conference secured R312.5 billion in investment pledges across 60 projects—surpassing its R300 billion target—bolstering confidence in the province’s economic future.
“Gauteng remains the economic nerve centre of South Africa,” Maile emphasized. “Even amid fiscal constraints, we are making strategic reallocations to drive growth and service delivery.”
The revised budget is aligned with the province’s Medium-Term Development Plan and is supported by a Revenue Enhancement Strategy focusing on system efficiencies and exploring new funding sources.
