According to JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla, during their routine patrol around Carlton Centre, the officers were informed by a member of the public about a suspicious white Toyota Quantum minibus.

“It was alleged that a group of males in the vehicle were reportedly robbing people in the Johannesburg CB, It’s also alleged that the same vehicle was involved in a business robbery at Commissioner and Von Brandis Street. The suspects are said to have robbed cellphones from all the customers and staff at Superbet,” explained Xolani Fihla.

The JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Xolani Fihla, said that the officers found the suspicious white Toyota Quantum on Mooi Street. “The officers traced the Toyota Quantum and located it on Mooi Street. When they signaled the vehicle to stop near the BP filling station, the suspects got out of the vehicle, and one of them fired at the JMPD vehicle using a heavy-caliber rifle,” added the JMPD spokesperson.

According to Fihla, a Metro Police Officer was hit by debris from the gunfire, sustaining an injury to his left upper shoulder. He was quickly taken to Milpark Medical Hospital with minor injuries.

Xolani Fihla said, “We are happy to report that the officer has been discharged and is now recuperating. The JMPD strongly condemns this act of violence against our officers who are committed to maintaining community safety. The department extends its wishes for a quick recovery to the officer and will be working tirelessly to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.”

Superintendent Xolani Fihla encouraged anyone with information about this incident to come forward and aid the ongoing police investigation.
