In a heartfelt farewell, General Fannie Masemola, the head of the South African Police Service (SAPS), extended warm wishes to Lieutenant General Elias Mawela as he retired after an impressive four-decade career.

Starting as a student Constable in 1984, Mawela worked his way up to Lieutenant General in 2011, taking on various roles such as Deputy Area Commissioner, Border Policing Head, and Divisional Commissioner of Operational Response Services. His accomplishments also include chairing NatJOINTS.

General Masemola praised Mawela not just as a skilled officer but also as a great leader. Mawela’s legacy includes building strong ties with communities and key stakeholders in the fight against crime. His brainchild, “O KAE MOLAO,” led Gauteng police in operations to trace suspects and recover stolen goods, giving rise to OPERATION SHANELA.

Reflecting on Mawela’s impact, General Masemola highlighted his lasting influence, portraying him as a dedicated operator serving South Africa with unwavering commitment. General Masemola thanked Mawela’s family for their support throughout his career.

As Mawela bids farewell, his legacy becomes an inspiration for future SAPS generations. The organization salutes his contributions, and the men and women in blue express gratitude for his dedication to the nation’s safety.

With Mawela’s retirement, SAPS starts recruiting for the Gauteng Provincial Commissioner position, marking a new chapter in leadership.

Brigadier Athlenda Mathe added, “I join General Fannie Masemola and the SAPS community in extending heartfelt well wishes to Lieutenant General Elias Mawela. His dedication during his four-decade service leaves an enduring legacy. Lieutenant General Mawela’s commitment to community relationships and his role in initiatives like ‘O KAE MOLAO’ showcase the true spirit of a servant leader. His footprint as a true operator will inspire future generations. We salute him for his dedication, and I thank his family for the sacrifices made throughout his remarkable career.”
