Student Living South Africa proudly welcomes Akhona Valashiya as its new Editor — a seasoned journalist, mentor, and advocate for social change whose appointment marks a new chapter for the publication.
Born in Sterkspruit, Eastern Cape and now based in Johannesburg, Akhona brings over 10 years of experience in the journalism and media industry. She holds a journalism qualification from Walter Sisulu University and is an alumna of the prestigious Highway Africa Future Journalist Programme.
Her storytelling is driven by strong values: gender equality, education, youth development, and women empowerment. These themes consistently shape her editorial work and her approach to mentorship. She has previously contributed to influential platforms including African Women in Dialogue and Kasi Voice News, where her writing helped amplify underrepresented voices and drive meaningful conversations.
Beyond journalism, Akhona is also a dedicated educator and mentor, committed to shaping the next generation of media professionals. Her work is guided by a clear belief in the power of media, education, and community to drive social transformation.
Publisher Christopher Mcinga expressed excitement about her appointment:
“We’re proud to have Akhona join the Student Living SA family. Her track record and passion for youth development align perfectly with our vision. We believe her leadership will not only strengthen the quality of our newsroom but also help shape our journalism interns into future leaders in media.”
“She brings the right balance of experience and heart. We look forward to the impact she’ll make and wish her all the best in her new role.”
Her appointment is key to the platform’s growth and deepening its role as a launchpad for young journalists from tertiary institutions across the country.
