On 15th June 2023, the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, in collaboration with the Alumni Relations and Advancement Office, officially launched its first Alumni chapter at the Protea Hotel (Fire and Ice) Menlyn in Pretoria. Dr. Van Wyk, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of ICT, expressed great pleasure in welcoming everyone to the official launch of the ICT Alumni chapter. He emphasized that TUT remains the only university in Southern Africa with an ICT faculty, distinguishing it from other institutions in the region.

Dr. Van Wyk also stated that the faculty aims to contribute to societal transformation through their technological expertise. The university believes in applying research and making renovations that have a social impact. One of the notable benefits of this chapter is not only for TUT alumni but also for high school students from Themba who will gain from it. It will prepare them for university studies in the ICT field when they enroll at TUT.

Dr. Pule, the Director of the Advancement and Partnership Office, highlighted the purpose of the day, emphasizing that TUT is an intriguing university of technology. He stressed the importance of engaging with alumni and working together to produce graduates who are prepared for the future. Dr. Pule stated that regular undergraduate students require mentors and industry support from their alumni.

Mr. Wanda Ndlovu, the Head of Innovation at Mbula Research and Development, provided further information about his company. He explained that Mbula Research and Development focuses on using advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, to solve societal problems. The company was established in 2015.

Reflecting on his own journey, Mr. Ndlovu shared that after graduating in 2001, he decided to pursue a career in software development. He gained valuable experience through an internship at the State Information Technology Agency (SITA). In 2015, he enrolled at TUT to pursue a BTECH degree to stay competitive and continuously update his knowledge. Following a job loss, he started Mbula Research and Development, which aims to create impactful solutions. In 2017, the company launched a platform to empower young people who are deaf or have communication difficulties to participate in the fourth industrial revolution.
