Fundani Children’s Home, valued at R7 million on North Coast Road in eThekwini, was officially opened on Friday by Vivian Reddy alongside the Mayor of eThekwini, Cyril Xaba, and the Minister of Social Development, Ganief Hendricks.
Reddy mentioned that helping people is something close to his heart as he does not like seeing people suffer. He stated that this home is especially meaningful to him because its founder, Prudence Mwandla, worked hard to ensure that orphans have a promising future.
“I am a businessperson who believes strongly in giving back to the community because I want people to live well. It is important that we do not solely rely on the government to do everything, but as businesspeople, we also contribute to the community. This home will uplift underprivileged children in the area,” said Reddy.
He added that his Sibaya Community Trust, which invests in the community, has donated R270 million to assist more than 200 community organizations in various ways.
The Mayor of eThekwini, Cyril Xaba, mentioned that other business owners should follow Reddy’s example and give back to the community to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. He stated that the government aims to eradicate poverty by 2030, so business owners should collaborate with the government to improve people’s lives.
The Minister of Social Development, Ganief Hendricks, noted that while the government provides grants to the poor, it is crucial for businesses to assist as well.
The Fundani Children’s Home will not only rescue children but also provide a promising future, nurturing families that will bring change in South Africa.
Mwandla expressed her gratitude towards Reddy, as she had been seeking help for another orphanage for over 15 years with no success. Njabulo Mngadi (30), who grew up in Khulani Children’s Shelter, mentioned that Mwandla helped him a lot when he came to the home after being abandoned by his parents.
“Life was tough after being abandoned by my parents, but Prudence took me in and raised me along with others in a similar situation. Today, I am successful, and I will help other children. This home will assist other orphans,” said Mngadi.
