South African football is in mourning following the death of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams, who died at the age of 25.

Police have confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened after Adams’ body was discovered at a residence in Schotschekloof, on the outskirts of Cape Town, on Saturday morning. Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances surrounding his death, and investigations are continuing.

The tragic news comes just weeks after Adams represented South Africa at the FIFA World Cup, where he played an important role in Bafana Bafana’s campaign.

Adams started South Africa’s opening match against Mexico before retaining his place in the starting line-up for the draw against Czechia. He later came off the bench in the final group-stage match as Bafana Bafana defeated South Korea to qualify for the Round of 32.

Although he did not feature in the knockout defeat to co-hosts Canada, his performances throughout the tournament underlined his growing influence in the national team and reinforced his reputation as one of South Africa’s brightest football talents.

Throughout his career, Adams earned widespread praise for his composure, technical ability and leadership on the field. His rise from domestic football to becoming a regular Bafana Bafana international inspired many young footballers across the country.

Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie described Adams’ death as a devastating loss for South African football.

“South African football has lost one of its brightest young talents, and our nation mourns alongside his family, his teammates and the millions of supporters who watched him grow from a promising academy prospect into a full Bafana Bafana international,” McKenzie said.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino also paid tribute to the midfielder, expressing condolences to his family and the football community.

“It is so incredibly sad to hear that South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams has passed away just weeks after featuring in his nation’s historic World Cup campaign. My thoughts and condolences, as well as those of everyone at FIFA and the global football community, are with his family, friends and teammates. The Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns star will be missed. May he rest in peace,” said Infantino.

Tributes have continued to pour in from teammates, former coaches, football administrators and supporters, many remembering Adams as a gifted player whose career was only beginning to flourish.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death are ongoing. Further details regarding memorial arrangements and official tributes are expected to be announced in the coming days.
