South Africa Higher education institutions are not immune to the skills crisis facing the country.
The South African university sector has lost a number of senior academics. Some have moved to the private sector whilst others have emigrated. For example, recently Prof Cheryl de la Rey resigned from the University of Pretoria to take on a new post in New Zealand; Dr Albert van Jaarsveld resigned from the University of KwaZulu-Natal to pursue a new opportunity in Austria; Prof Ihron Rensburg left the University of Johannesburg for the private sector.
It`s imperative that measures are taken to make the Higher education sector attractive to senior academics, failure of which would have dire consequences for the sector. The issue is not just recruitment but rather the retention of these highly skilled individuals.
