In the recently released results for the 2023 National Senior Certificate exams conducted by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), a remarkable general pass rate of 98.46% was achieved. The IEB, known for its independent status, operates outside the government’s purview and caters primarily to private schools. Out of the 15,211 matriculants who undertook the IEB exams last year, only around 234 were unsuccessful, marking a significant accomplishment for the majority of students.
As of 2023, there are 248 schools registered with the IEB, with over half of them (135 schools) situated in Gauteng, predominantly constituting private educational institutions, according to information from Business Day
