IEB Celebrates Success: 98.46% Matric Pass Rate and Provincial Achievements in 2023

In the recently released results for the 2023 National Senior Certificate exams conducted by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), a remarkable general pass rate of 98.46% was achieved. The IEB, known for its independent status, operates outside the government’s purview and caters primarily to private schools. Out of the 15,211 matriculants who undertook the IEB exams last year, only around 234 were unsuccessful, marking a significant accomplishment for the majority of students.

As of 2023, there are 248 schools registered with the IEB, with over half of them (135 schools) situated in Gauteng, predominantly constituting private educational institutions, according to information from Business Day

Examining the provincial performance levels reveals interesting insights into the educational landscape:

Free State: Leading the pack with an impressive 89.0% pass rate, an increase of 0.5% from the previous year. It’s essential to acknowledge the passing of Dr. Tate Makgoe, the former MEC of Education in the Free State, who contributed significantly to the province’s education sector.

KwaZulu-Natal: Emerging as the third most improved province, achieving an 86.4% pass rate, a commendable 3.4% increase from 2022.

Gauteng: Maintaining its strong standing with an 85.4% pass rate, demonstrating a steady improvement of 1.0% from the previous year.

North West: Posting a noteworthy 81.6% pass rate, showcasing an encouraging increase of 1.8% from 2022.

Western Cape: Achieving an 81.5% pass rate, reflecting a modest 0.1% improvement from the previous year.

Eastern Cape: Emerging as the second most improved province, recording an 81.4% pass rate, a substantial 4.1% increase from 2022.

Limpopo: Earning the title of the most improved province, with a commendable achievement of 79.5%, marking an impressive 7.4% improvement from the previous year.

Mpumalanga: Maintaining a solid performance with a 77.0% pass rate, a marginal 0.2% increase from 2022.

Northern Cape: Achieving a pass rate of 75.8%, reflecting a commendable 1.6% increase from the previous year.

These provincial variations in performance highlight the dynamic nature of education in South Africa, with regions making strides in enhancing the quality of matric education. The IEB’s commitment to maintaining high standards remains evident, contributing to the overall success of matriculants across the country.
