Former ANC President Thabo Mbeki spoke out against his successor, Jacob Zuma, during a party meeting. The National Executive Committee had decided to suspend Zuma for breaking party rules, and Mbeki didn’t hold back.
Mbeki called Zuma’s time as Head of State and party President “counter-revolutionary years,” claiming it brought failure and disaster to the ANC. He pointed to Zuma’s alleged involvement in taking over important institutions like the South African Revenue Services (SARS) and Eskom.
“He took over the process of destruction, him and Tom Moyane aggressively so,” Mbeki stated, blaming key figures for worsening problems in government agencies.
Mbeki argued that Zuma’s actions contributed to the negative image of the ANC today. He compared the prosperous years between 1994 and 2007, marked by economic growth and less crime, to the challenges after 2008 under Zuma’s leadership.
Speaking at the end of the meeting, Mbeki’s words left a strong impression, urging the ANC to reflect on its leadership and the consequences of decisions made during Zuma’s time in office. The critique highlighted the need for the ANC to address past mistakes and move forward
