Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, Minister of Higher Education and Training, will lead a two-day stakeholder engagement to assess the readiness of the Post-School Education and Training (PSET) sector for the 2025 academic year. The meeting will take place on 22–23 January 2025 at ANEW Hotel OR Tambo in Benoni, starting at 10:00. A media briefing to share the outcomes will be held at the same venue on 23 January at 13:30.
The engagement will bring together stakeholders from student organisations, universities, TVET colleges, and community colleges to discuss critical issues affecting the PSET sector. These include readiness for the upcoming academic year, progress in addressing delays in student funding disbursements, infrastructure development, and ICT improvements. Stakeholders will also explore strategies to align curriculum content with national skills priorities and enhance governance, safety, and security at institutions.
Expanding access to education is another key focus, with plans to increase enrolments in colleges and universities by 2030. The meeting will also prioritise solutions to ongoing challenges in student accommodation, aiming to ensure housing is affordable, safe, and conducive to learning.
Minister Nkabane has reaffirmed her commitment to improving the efficiency of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) and ensuring a smooth start to the 2025 academic year. This engagement underscores the Department’s dedication to building a capable and skilled workforce to support South Africa’s developmental goals.
Members of the media are invited to attend the press briefing and provide coverage of this significant discussion.
