On 14th June 2023, a Gauteng Provincial Membership meeting took place at the Mail and Guardian in Johannesburg at 10 o’clock. The event was attended by members of the Association of Independent Publishers, and Actavia Hlungwani welcomed all the attendees.
The Association of Independent Publishers (AIP) had invited Vijay Miharaj, the CEO of Rising Sun Printers, to speak at the meeting. Miharaj emphasized that they don’t have too many competitors in their space. They focus on identifying a significant market footprint where clients can benefit and receive feedback.
Rising Sun Printers is a prominent commercial closet web printing company with operations in KwaZulu Natal, Gauteng, and Bloemfontein. They have made a name for themselves in South Africa, publishing six newspapers in Durban. Two of these newspapers are in broadsheet format, with one having a weekly circulation of 53,250 on the north coast, and the other reaching 65,000 readers per week.
Miharaj mentioned that they publish seven newspapers, with an average weekly circulation of over 300,000 copies. They print and distribute publications in various areas, equipped with efficient machinery to handle their stock.
“One thing you should know is that our print quality is excellent. We pride ourselves on clarity and good print quality. We can capture photos in the dark, even blurry ones while moving the camera,” stated Miharaj. He also mentioned that they have a 48-hour timeframe to print 8,500 copies with six pages and content in eleven different languages, ensuring timely distribution through all their branches. The company has generators in place to handle power failures and keep their printing presses operational. Miharaj expressed their readiness to sell one plant, but they are cautious about selling it to someone who would neglect it since their current focus extends beyond the country.
The CEO of the Mail and Guardian welcomed and extended support to all members of the Associated Independent Publishers. He acknowledged the challenges they face in the industry and expressed a desire to offer them the opportunity to read the Mail and Guardian. Furthermore, he invited members to spend a few days each month working at their newsroom, where they could share experiences and explore how the Mail and Guardian’s work could assist them.
