Sponch Makhekhe, a singer and music video director, is gaining international popularity with his latest song, “Isthembu.”
The Soweto-born musician, whose real name is Muntu Maseko (34), started singing at the age of 10. His songs are gaining popularity in countries such as Canada, Texas, Brazil, and Australia.
“I’m not boxed in. I grew up with my mom loving music, she is one of my biggest inspirations. I don’t have anyone in the music industry who inspires me. I was given my first studio opportunity by the legendary kwaito group called ‘Alaska,’” said Sponch.
The message of this song resonates with many people. It addresses a universal theme that most are scared to acknowledge.
“Isthembu is a song inspired by what we face as a society. A lot of people are afraid to talk about it. Me singing about ‘Isthembu’ is just me expressing what I have been through,” Sponch said.
He mentioned that the song is doing well on SA Music Downloads, with two million downloads. Sponch announced that the song is now available on all online music platforms.
“I have learned the ropes by taking my music to radio stations and directing my own music videos. I found ways to get on TV and radio because there was not enough money to reach my dreams,” said Sponch.
He has also contributed to popular amapiano tracks like “Kokota Piano” by Bizizi and Kaygee, “Ama BBW” by DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, and MFR Soul’s “Spharaphara.”
