After a fiercely contested race that captured global attention for months, former U.S. President Donald J. Trump has been re-elected as the 47th President of the United States, securing a return to the White House. This significant victory follows an intense campaign and numerous challenges, including surviving an assassination attempt.
Less than four months ago, Trump was injured during an open-air campaign rally near Butler, Pennsylvania, when he was shot in the upper right ear. Despite the incident, Trump managed to gain a substantial lead over his opponent, Kamala Harris, winning 72,641,564 votes—exceeding her tally by 4,683,669 votes. His return is widely regarded as one of the most dramatic comebacks in U.S. political history, especially after facing not one, but two assassination attempts during the campaign. Adding to the twists, his initial opponent, incumbent President Joe Biden, withdrew from the race only months before election day, paving the way for Harris to become the main Democratic contender.
In his victory speech, Trump outlined seven key priorities for his new term, promising to “keep our promises.” His agenda includes increased deportation of undocumented migrants, revising economic policies with tax and tariff changes, reducing climate regulations, and working to end the conflict in Ukraine. He assured supporters that he would not impose a national abortion ban, signalled potential pardons for some participants in the January 6th Capitol riots, and pledged to remove Special Counsel Jack Smith from office.
World leaders responded quickly to the election outcome, with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol being one of the first to congratulate Trump. According to a presidential official in Seoul, the two leaders discussed plans to strengthen security and economic ties between their countries.
As Trump prepares to resume leadership of the United States, he has promised a presidency guided by the principle of “promises made, promises kept,” signalling a focused and ambitious approach to his administration’s priorities.
