On 15 November 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the nation about the rise in food-related illnesses, including the tragic deaths of children linked to food purchased from spaza shops and street vendors.
Since September 2024, 890 cases have been reported, with 22 children losing their lives, including six in Naledi, Soweto. Investigations revealed that illegal pesticides, such as Terbufos, were being used in some spaza shops.
The government announced key actions to address this issue, including:
- Closing spaza shops linked to the deaths of children.
- Conducting nationwide inspections of food shops.
- Launching a public awareness campaign on food safety and the dangers of harmful chemicals.
Additionally, R500 million has been allocated to help township businesses comply with health standards. Municipalities have been urged to improve waste management and tackle rat infestations.
President Ramaphosa called on all South Africans to take responsibility for food safety and the proper use of chemicals to protect the country’s children.
