The City of Tshwane is taking steps to evict the Silver Valke Rugby Club from its Silverton facility, citing serious lease breaches.
MMC for Corporate and Shared Services, Kholofelo Morodi, revealed that the club’s lease expired years ago but remained in use. Investigations found the club sublet part of the facility to a school, violating lease terms that reserved it exclusively for rugby. Additionally, alcohol was reportedly sold near the school, raising safety concerns.
The school paid the club R12,000 monthly in rent, while the club paid the City only R500. Morodi called this “a serious concern” and stressed responsible use of municipal properties.
The school will continue operating during the transition as efforts are made to find it a new location. “We must prioritise the welfare of our youth,” said Morodi.
The Silver Valke Rugby Club has 60 days to appeal the eviction. The City plans to lease the facility to tenants who comply fully with its rules.
