Journalism is often referred to as the “fourth estate” and plays a crucial role in the functioning of democracy. It provides citizens with the information they need to make informed decisions, hold those in power accountable, and shape public opinion. However, the news industry has been facing numerous challenges in recent years, including declining revenue, shrinking newsrooms, and the rise of fake news and misinformation. To ensure the continued vitality of journalism, it is essential to focus on sustainability.

What is Journalism Sustainability?

Journalism sustainability refers to the ability of news organizations to generate enough revenue to support their operations, invest in their future, and continue to produce high-quality journalism.

There are several key components of journalism sustainability:

Diversifying Revenue Streams – In the past, news organizations relied heavily on advertising revenue to support their operations. However, with the decline of print advertising and the rise of digital advertising, this model is no longer sustainable. News organizations must find new ways to generate revenue, such as subscription models, events, and sponsored content.

Investing in Digital Infrastructure – As more people consume news online, it is essential for news organizations to have a robust digital infrastructure that can support their content delivery. This includes investing in technologies such as content management systems, data analytics, and mobile applications.

Adapting to Changing Consumer Behavior – News consumers today have different expectations than those of previous generations. They want news that is personalized, interactive and available on-demand. News organizations must adapt to these changing consumer preferences and offer content that meets their needs.

Challenges Faced by Journalism

The traditional business model of journalism is based on advertising revenue. However, with the advent of digital media, advertising revenue has decreased, and news organizations are struggling to find alternative sources of funding. Additionally, social media has disrupted the traditional model of distribution, as news organizations are competing with a plethora of sources for the attention of the audience. Moreover, the decline in print media has led to a decrease in subscriptions, further adding to the challenges faced by journalism.

Importance of Sustainability

Journalism sustainability is essential because it enables news organizations to continue to produce high-quality journalism. When news organizations are financially stable, they can invest in their newsrooms, hire talented journalists, and produce more in-depth and investigative reporting. This type of reporting is crucial for holding those in power accountable and informing the public about important issues.

Additionally, a sustainable news industry is essential for the functioning of democracy. Without a free and independent press, citizens would be unable to hold those in power accountable, and the public discourse would be dominated by those with the loudest voices and the deepest pockets.

Ways to Make Journalism Sustainable

There are several ways in which journalism can be made sustainable. One way is through diversifying revenue streams. News organizations can explore alternative sources of funding, such as reader revenue, philanthropy, grants, and partnerships. This ensures that the organization is not solely dependent on advertising revenue.

Another way to make journalism sustainable is through building a loyal audience. News organizations can focus on building a strong relationship with their audience by producing quality content and engaging with their audience through social media and other channels. This will not only increase the loyalty of the audience but also provide opportunities for reader revenue and partnerships. Collaboration is also an essential aspect of sustainability. News organizations can collaborate with other organizations to produce content, share resources, and cut costs. Collaboration can also lead to more comprehensive reporting and provide an opportunity to share expertise. Lastly, innovation is critical for sustainability. News organizations can explore new technologies and ways of distribution to reach new audiences and create new revenue streams. For example, some news organizations have experimented with podcasts, video content, and virtual events.

Sustaining journalism is critical for the functioning of society. While the challenges faced by journalism are significant, there are several ways in which journalism can be made sustainable. Diversifying revenue streams, building a loyal audience, collaboration, and innovation are key to ensuring the long-term sustainability of journalism. It is essential that news organizations and journalists adapt to the changing landscape of journalism and embrace new opportunities to create a sustainable future for journalism.

Shaping the future of journalism

Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya hosted a three day Sustainable Journalism conference on the 23rd – 25th May 2023 in partnership with WITS Centre for Journalism, and the international organisation Fojo. The conference addressed issues around sustainability and aimed to develop a concrete action plan towards Shaping the future of journalism.

“This conference is a gesture of an international commitment to make journalism sustainable financially, socially and culturally. We are deeply committed to sustainability and to journalism that is shaped by Africa and its everyday realities”. – Dinesh Balliah, Director of Wits Centre for Journalism in South Africa.

This is a practical example of how the media industry is addressing  issues around sustainability and Laos highlighting the importance of  having a concerted effort from all stakeholders working together to support this vital industry.
