On the afternoon of Monday, August 26, the Mayoral Urban Management Plan visited Soshanguve, Region 1. There is an ongoing problem with illegal dumping in Soshanguve. The plan includes ensuring that the streets are kept clean by organizing regular cleaning efforts and distributing street dustbins throughout the area.
“We plead with community members not to continue with illegal dumping. We want the community to envision the future of gardens,” said the Tshwane MMC for Utilities.
They gathered to clean the nearest dumping site around the Tshwane University of Technology and to create spaces for gardens and recreational activities.
Over the past month, the City has repaired about 1,000 streetlights in Soshanguve. However, the majority of them were stripped the very next day. Cable theft continues to reverse the gains made in service delivery.
“The problem we have is that crime affects service delivery. A few weeks ago, we installed streetlights, and they were stolen. We are fighting a constant battle against crime,” said Tshwane Mayor Brink.
“It’s disheartening to see people dumping near the university. Matlala Road is a busy road and, at the same time, dirty. We will have to work together as a community to improve our township,” said Lwazi, a community member.
Community members in Soshanguve Block L have promised to work together with the police to prevent illegal dumping.
