Coach Mpendulo Nyuswa of Shayamoya Academy is thrilled about their participation in the Engen Knockout Challenge, viewing it as a prime opportunity for his team to vie for the title despite the stiff competition.
Shayamoya clinched the championship in the KwaZulu-Natal Engen Knockout Challenge by defeating Kusekhaya FC 5-3 in an exciting match. Concurrently, Durban Ladies excelled in the women’s competition, overpowering Babhambe with a 7-2 victory in the finals.
The games are held at Edgewood Grounds in eThekwini on weekends, featuring 34 teams competing in the U/18 and U/20 categories for both boys and girls.The Durban Ladies displayed remarkable resilience to triumph in the women’s category.
AmaZulu, on the other hand, faced a setback, being eliminated by Midlands Academy in the quarterfinals.Shayamoya from Mzinto and Durban Ladies from Mlazi will represent KwaZulu-Natal in the Engen Champ of Champs tournament in Johannesburg this September.Coach Nyuswa expressed his delight over their victory, “Winning this tournament is a huge achievement for us as it features the top teams in KwaZulu-Natal. Our players have worked incredibly hard, and this victory is a testament to their dedication.We have put in a lot of effort to reach the finals, and our triumph brings us immense joy,” said Nyuswa, who has earned a reputation as a successful coach in this tournament.
“I have confidence in my boys, and I believe we can go all the way to the Champ of Champs if we remain focused”, he added.
Nyuswa also highlighted the valuable experience gained from participating in major tournaments like the Bayhill Premier Cup, where they competed against PSL teams.Similarly, Durban Ladies coach Skhumbuzo Mkhize, recognized for his success in women’s soccer, believes their hard work and dedication have set them up for victory.
“We have worked tirelessly, and this result showcases our commitment. We trained twice a day, especially during school holidays, to prepare for this tournament. Knowing the competition would be tough, our focus was on the prize,” Mkhize said.
“We are excited for the national tournament in Johannesburg and are committed to giving our best to achieve success and make history at the Engen Champ of Champs,” Mkhize concluded.
