Several organizations, schools, and community members came together to honor Mandela Day. Mandela Day is internationally recognized as a day to commemorate the achievements of Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected President of the Republic of South Africa.
Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) – Directorate of Extracurricular Development at Arts and Arcadia Campuses donated non-perishable food parcels and clothing items to the needy in Pretoria to mark Mandela Day 2024.
“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead,” said Lukhanyo, a TUT student.
Meanwhile, Tshwane University of Technology Soshanguve Campus collaborated with various NGOs and corporations to donate school shoes to Kutung Primary School in the community. Thato Mogale, a teacher at the school, said the school serves pupils from extremely poor homes, and some had to brave the cold winters without warm clothes. He added that the donations will encourage pupils to concentrate on their schoolwork.
“We had children without shoes, now they can attend classes with confidence,” he said.
In commemoration of Mandela Day, Soshanguve Crossing Mall celebrated by giving back to the community, particularly the elders. “We are so grateful for such beautiful gifts in honor of our late father, Tata Mandela,” said Mrs. Gumede, a community member.
These initiatives highlight the commitment of the university to uphold Mandela Day’s values of service, community, and kindness. By engaging with different segments of the community and addressing their needs, the district’s leadership is fostering a spirit of unity and care that resonates with Mandela’s enduring legacy.
